Insuring Hot Air Balloons

Published on

Hot air balloons are popular all over the world, attracting many to the romance of escaping the restraints of the earth below and looking down on the majesty and beauty below.

For many people, their first flight in a balloon may be to celebrate a special occasion or anniversary where with others it is to fulfill a lifetime ambition or even as a part-time sport.

At RPS, we get the attraction. We are the largest hot air balloon insurance provider in the United States, and have been offering coverage solutions to the hot air and gas balloon community for more than 30 years. Our insureds include balloon enthusiasts who ride just for the fun of it and commercial/ride operators, which are run similarly to a small airline company. We also cover balloon events.

While it’s a beautiful sport and has been recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) as the safest air sport in aviation, ballooning does come with certain hazards. This includes excessive (vertical or horizontal) speed during landing, mid-air collisions that may collapse the balloon, and colliding with high voltage power lines. In fact, contact with power lines poses the greatest danger for passengers and pilots alike. Other hazards include striking a tree because of high winds and fire in the basket caused by a leaking fuel line, among other things.

To protect against the potential risks of bodily injury, RPS provides Third-Party Liability insurance and Passenger & Crew Liability Coverage. Property damage to the balloon is available with Hull Coverage, providing protection for the balloon and basket (gondola). Medical expenses are available with limits up to $25,000 available as well as Host Liquor Liability. In addition to the United States, Canada, and Mexico, we can offer worldwide coverage (most countries) for hot air and gas balloons.

Voluntary Settlement Coverage is also available. This coverage pays for accidental death or dismemberment while pursing ballooning activities and is available from $5000 to $50,000 at very reasonable rates.  You may select the coverage for the pilot passengers/crew up to the balloon carriage capacity. It covers death or dismemberment while aviating. Family assistance coverage is included with this coverage. For example, a passenger is fatally injured in an accident. This is optional coverage (up to limits stated) for the immediate family member(s) to travel to the location and stay locally. It also includes grief counseling.

We also provide coverage for blimps and personal and commercial drones.

Our experience in the ballooning community is reflected by our more than 2,500 insureds, distinguishing us in the insurance market, with our staff’s commitment to staying current on regulations and our partnership with a global aviation insurer.
